Scavenger – From Carrie’s Closet to Yours, Only Cheaper

In the real world, most of us need the “wallet-friendly versions of its [Sex & The City 2's] sartorial extravagances.”

Don’t you love that the recession has made affordable luxury not only acceptable but super savvy?!

Sidenote: I gotta have those purple pumps!

Happy Mother’s Day and Huge Thanks to My Mom!

This video is for my Mom. I don’t think it needs a lot of words… but if I were to add some, they’d be along these lines: Thanks for teaching me to be tough and tenacious. To have a sense of humor – and great appreciation for one. For making me stand on my own when I just wanted to hide under the covers (or behind your skirt, as a child). Thank you for giving me an appreciation for the outdoors, even against my will. Thank you for teaching me to be open-minded and honest, and for teaching me the power of forgiveness and acceptance.

Thank you for being honest with me, and teaching me honesty. Thank you for not painting my world with a bunch of flowers all the time – that’s not reality…. and it made me more prepared for life. Thank you for giving me an appreciation for the good things in life: great food, wine, art, nature, love. And for teaching me that those good things can overcome the bad.

Thank you for working so hard to make our family whole. Thank you for hosting Christmas for oh, at least 40 some years. :) Thank you for teaching me how to stay strong in tough times and giving me a sense of stubbornness that has served me well. And, that although life is far from perfect, there are amazing things that can happen every day.

I hope I can teach my kids all the wonderful things you’ve shared with me – and be at least as good a mother as you are. I love you.

Mother’s Day – With or Without the Kids?

Everywhere you look there are reminders that tomorrow is Mother’s Day: TV ads, Facebook and Twitter promotions, blog posts, restaurant flyers and more. (Did you know that it’s one of the busiest days all year for phone calls?)

So what do Moms really want? If you’re a mother of young children, are you one that wants to spend the day *with* your children or *without*? If we’re being honest, I think most young Moms would like a day of pampering away from the kids – and without having to feel guilty about it. Older mothers with adult children would probably love to spend the day with their kids if they could.

// My ideal day would be to sleep in, have a nice breakfast with my husband and kids, get sent off to a full day at the spa and then have a big dinner party at a great restaurant with all my closest mom friends and moms in my extended family – and their spouses and kids. I’m a sucker for a huge party – no cooking (not that I ever do that, thanks to Rich), no dishes, ‘lots of fun. Ideally the husbands would entertain us with some funny skit with the kids that keeps us laughing all night. And, when we get home, someone else puts the kids to bed and does all the prep for school the next day.

What kind of Mom are you – is Mother’s Day a day to be with or without the kids?

8 Years Ago Today…

….My life changed forever!

On this day eight years ago, my husband Rich and I were surrounded by boxes, after having just moved into our new home two days before. I was still working – thinking that I had a good 4-5 weeks to unpack, settle in and wrap up work items before maternity leave. But as it turns out, moving in your last month of (your first) pregnancy can be kind of stressful….

I was planning to attend a meeting to meet the new VP of Marketing at a client’s company, but after some (caring) pressure from my husband, agreed to first swing by the doctor for a quick check up due to some issues with swelling in my ankles (no cankle jokes!). I was expecting to be in and out and on my way – but as I would later learn, with kids the best laid plans are meant to be changed. The doctor told me that I should call my client and tell them I wouldn’t be at the meeting …. because I was in labor!

And as fate would have it, Rich – who had never before and has never since – forgot his mobile phone and was offsite at a meeting all day! I drove myself to the hospital while my sister-in-law tried to calm me down on the phone. She also helped me track Rich down. Turns out I had preeclampsia (high blood pressure) and that’s why I had swelling. It’s also the reason I ended up having a c-section. While waiting for the operating room to open up, I made several work calls and negotiated a new hire’s offer from the gurney. At 8:59 p.m., our first son was born. He was about 5 weeks early and unfortunately, he wasn’t able to eat and breathe at the same time. So when we were discharged from the hospital, we had to leave our baby behind. It was an awful feeling and one I will never forget. For the next week we spent every day at the hospital as long as we could, just watching him, feeding him, holding him. It was definitely one of the hardest weeks of my life. But look at him now! He turned eight today – time truly does fly when you have children. He’s happy, healthy, handsome and smart. Thumbs up to our own little super man – Happy Birthday RP! We love you!
